One of the best things to have happened since starting this photography business is reconnecting with old friends. Linda and I met over 10 years ago through my husband. They used to work together and somehow I ended up on their ultimate frisbee team. Is that still a thing? Anyhow, fast forward 12 or so years and we run into each other one day on the street – Linda and her daughter Elise are on a walk with a mommy group and I’m on my way out with my littlest to Science World. But hey, they’re stopping for coffee first so I happily detour and join them. I end up walking with them too, and Linda and I get to catch up. My photography comes up in conversation and she mentions that she’s considering hiring a photographer for Elise’s first birthday. A month later, I’m that photographer!
If I’m being honest, I was a little nervous about this shoot. I had never been to the venue, was unsure about the lighting, and had never really taken photos at a birthday party before. But it was all for naught as I realized once I started shooting, that it was so much more than a venue, the lighting, or what I was photographing. I saw the love of a mother for her daughter in all of the little details of the party, from the handmade decorations right down to the kid-friendly snacks. I saw grandparents loving on their precious little granddaughter. I saw how much the birthday girl adores her big sis and I saw friends gathered to not only celebrate Elise’s big day, but to support her parents Linda and Chris. It was so heartwarming to witness and I can’t help but smile every time I look over these photos. Thank you so much for letting me document this day and for reminding me that these fleeting, everyday moments are what I love to photograph most. Happy birthday, little Miss E! ♥
